Authentic Hvar — Back to the Roots
The island behind the island — lavender, honey, abandoned stone villages, and the people keeping old Hvar alive.
Everyone knows Hvar’s harbour. Almost no one knows the island behind it: high stone villages half-returned to the wild, lavender fields that perfume whole valleys in June, and families still making wine, honey and oil the way their great-grandparents did.
Lavender fields, honey and small-grower wines, away from the beaches
Chapter I
Over the ridge
A short climb out of the glamour and the island changes century. In the old villages of the interior — Velo Grablje, Malo Grablje, Humac — you walk lanes built for donkeys, meet the handful of families who stayed, and hear how lavender once made this island rich. In early summer the fields hum with bees and the air itself smells purple.
Chapter II
Tables in the hills
Lunch happens in a village konoba with no menu: whatever the fire and the garden offer that day, with honey from hives you passed on the walk and wine from a vineyard measured in rows, not hectares. It ends, as everything on Hvar should, with a view of the sea — from far enough above it to keep the secret.
