Story 12 / 12 · Pelješac Peninsula
Off-Road Through Pelješac Vineyards
By 4×4 over the wine mountain — vineyards at forty-five degrees, and the sea on both sides.
The greatest red wines of Croatia grow on slopes you can barely stand on — the sun-hammered seaward face of Pelješac, where vines cling at angles that defeat machines. The only way in is over the top, off-road, with someone who knows every switchback.
Dramatic landscapes, organic vineyards and premium wine tasting
Chapter I
Over the top
The 4×4 leaves the asphalt above Potomje and climbs through macchia and dry-stone walls until the Adriatic appears on both sides at once. Below, the famous Dingač slope falls almost vertically to the sea — every row planted, tended and picked by hand, exactly as it was a century ago.
Chapter II
Tasting at the source
Among the vines, an organic winemaker opens his cellar cut straight into the hillside: Plavac Mali from the great slopes, poured metres from where it grew, with cheese, olives and the peninsula’s fierce sunshine for company. The descent winds down to a fishing village for a seafood dinner as the light goes gold.
